On Saturday November 4, the Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum – home of Somerville Collection will officially open and announce the prize winners of the inaugural photographic competition 'Unearthed and Exposed.'

In June this year the Museum challenged photo enthusiasts of all ages to get behind the lens of their cameras and explore the natural history of our planet. Entrants to the competition were invited to submit an image which either displayed evidence of the Earth’s geological history or captured the beauty of a fossil or mineral specimen.

The exhibition, which will be on display in the Museum’s temporary exhibition space until November 27, shows a selection of the best entries submitted to the competition.

‘Inspired by a similar competition run through the Australian Museum, Unearthed and Exposed encouraged participants to learn more about natural history while developing their photographic talents.’ Sarah-Mace Dennis, Museum Manager said.

‘The exhibition presents an exciting survey of photographic work that delivers a fresh and diverse look at our natural world, with the quality of the entries incredibly high.’

The competition has four main entry categories, each with exciting prizes. Emerging and professional photographers will be displayed in two ‘Open’ categories. The first category invited participants to photograph a fossil or mineral specimen. The second titled ‘Our Geological World’ asked entrants to take a photograph inspired by Earth history. This category was also open to primary and secondary school children. In addition, at the conclusion of the show there will be a people’s choice award, determined by visitors to the Museum who can vote for their favourite entry.

‘With continual developments in new imaging technologies, photography is a medium that is becoming increasingly accessible to a wide range of people. A competition like this one is accessible to people of many ages, and is an ideal way for them to explore their skills, be creative, and discover intersections between geology and science.’ Sarah-Mace Dennis, Museum Manager said.

Entries to the competition will judged by the Museum’s Curator Warren Somerville, and local photographers Alan McRae and Ken Ball.

The exhibition runs from Saturday November 4 – Monday November 27 2006. The Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum is located at 224 Howick Street, Bathurst and is open 10am – 4pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 2pm Sunday. Admission charges apply.
